The City of Fort Worth was awarded grant funds through Cities of Service, which is a nonprofit organization that helps mayors build stronger cities by changing the way local government and citizens work together. Cities of Service supports a coalition of more than 260 cities. This organization helps coalition cities tap into the knowledge, creativity, and service of their citizens to help identify and solve critical public problems.
Cities of Service and its program partner, American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) launched Experience Matters Program to mobilize volunteers to tackle education and economic related issues such as financial security, energy efficiency, and youth academic performance.
The intent of this partnership, is to engage older adults as volunteers in efforts to address public problems related to the drivers of poverty, such as financial insecurity, planning and exploitation. The Experience Matters Program area of focus is financial empowerment and is administered by the City of Fort Worth Neighborhood Services Department. The program focus areas are the following:
